
Arthur G. “Pop” Murtz, 77, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, July 6, 2015, in Norfolk, VA. Born on October 16, 1937 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Arthur Francis Murtz and Jane Isabella Allen Murtz. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Pop served in White Sands, NM during the 1950’s Cold War. Later in the New Jersey Army National Guard, he served as a Tank Commander and as an Instructor to his troops – achieving the enlisted rank of Sergeant First Class. As a civilian, Pop worked for many years as a Machinist for Seaport Marine Corp. In his spare time, he enjoyed model building, carpentry, camping with his family and fishing. Pop will be remembered most for his love and devotion to his family and helping others, teaching them life-skills needed for success. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Josephine Anne Miller Murtz; two daughters, Marie R. Murtz of Norfolk, VA, Amanda G. Murtz of Norfolk, VA; three sisters, Barbara Figaro of Branson, MO, Linda Murtz of Whiting, NJ, Grace Posemato of Whiting, NJ; four grandsons, Joshua, Anthony, Kyren, Ayden Murtz of Norfolk, VA; a granddaughter, Allison Barber of Norfolk, VA; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Pop was predeceased by a sister, Jane Otlowski.
A celebration of Pop’s life will be held Sunday, July 19, 2015, 1:00 p.m. at Family Choice Funerals & Cremations, 5401 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464, with Rev. Rob Pittman officiating. Military honors will be rendered Monday, July 20, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery Interment Shelter, 5310 Milners Rd., Suffolk, VA 23434.
