Darren was my colleague in the Psychology Department at UVa for several years. He was a brilliant social psychologist who made important contributions to the field of social perception, or how people perceive and understand each other’s behavior. He was knowledgeable about so many things; I particularly appreciated his love of nature. When my wife and I first came to Charlottesville he took us on many hikes to the Shenandoah National Park and Old Rag. I am very sorry to hear the news of his passing and send my sincerest condolences to his family.
In graduate school, I started reading Darren’s work on dynamics of social perception and action and I eventually corresponded with him about that work. His writing and that correspondence had a strong (much delayed) influence on later research I did. I do not think Darren is aware of just how much he influenced a number of social psychologists/other cognitive scientists who wanted to see the field grapple with the kinds of questions he tackled. He was a creative and brilliant thinker and I know that I speak for many people who knew his work when I say that I am so very very sad that he is gone.
For many years I looked forward both to exchanging ideas with Darren at conventions and reading the newest twists and turns of his unitization research and then to his more abstract social coordination work. He was one of the most original thinkers in social psychology and at the same time, one of the most under-recognized. Furthermore, he was one of the nicest people in the field that I had the pleasure of knowing. I will miss him greatly.
