
Doretha V. McCall King was born to the late Oscar and Dorothy Barnes McCall in Washington, DC on March 5, 1935. She was the oldest of two girls born in that union.
Doretha, or Dee, as she was known was raised most of her life in Harlem, New York City where she graduated Julia Richmond High School in the early 1950’s. There she was considered lovely, humorous, friendly and fashionable. Upon arriving in New York City with her mother, Dorothy Barnes McCall and younger sister Antoinette McCall, she met a striking young man, Hubert M. King. Hubert and Doretha became friends, and a loving life partnership began. Hubert and Doretha married on May 2, 1954. From this loving union, three children were born: Rhonda M., Hubert M. Jr., and Doreen Y.
Doretha worked for many years as an Executive Administrative Assistant for IBM Corporation in Westchester County New York.
Doretha was a wonderful singer who also loved dancing from the time she walked into a dance hall until it closed! She enjoyed sewing, cooking, interior decorating and entertaining guests. Doretha and her husband, Hubert Sr., loved to travel abroad and visited many exotic places.
Doretha and Hubert Sr. relocated to Mount Vernon, New York where they purchased a home and raised their young family. Upon retiring in the late 1980’s they purchased a second home in Virginia Beach.
Doretha is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, Hubert Sr. and her children: Rhonda, Hubert Jr., and Doreen. In addition, she leaves to morn two nieces Karen and Lynette; three nephews John IV, Kevin and William; one sister-in-law, Olga; one daughter-in-law, Charlene; and grandson Johnathan and family; in addition to an array of relatives from many locations.
