Dorothy T. Sims, a lifelong resident of Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach passed away peacefully in her home surrounded and comforted by her family and close friends on May 26, 2015.
She was a 1953 graduate (3rd in her class!) of Kempsville High School. Shortly after graduation she married and had three children, Blanche Elizabeth, Emmett Gregory, and Thomas Lynn Murphy. When that marriage proved not to be, she later met and married the love of her life, Raymond B Sims, Jr. That marriage produced her youngest child Kevin L Sims.
Her career included being a wife, mother and homemaker as well as a Virginia Beach Public Schools bus driver where she served for 29 years before retiring in 2007.
She was a lover of travel, having traveled at every opportunity and seeing a large portion of Europe and Southeast Asia, and most of the United States. Her other hobbies included knitting, sewing, crocheting, counted cross stitch, sketching, gardening, and her most favorite activity, spending time with her grandchildren.
She was an original member of East Ocean View Presbyterian church, where she worshipped faithfully and enjoyed singing with the choir. She later transferred her membership to Calvin Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed worshipping, singing in the choir, participating in church-sponsored activities and helping with vacation bible school.
Sadly 15 years ago she was stricken with Alzheimers disease and over time lost the freedoms she once loved. She never lost the love of her family; her husband Ray being her most devoted caregiver, supporter, and never disobeying his vows to honor her in sickness and in health.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Helen Tompkins, daughter Beth Covey, and son Tom Murphy. She is survived by her sister Eva Bracy (Ronald), and brother John Tompkins, her loving husband of 50 years, Ray Sims, son Greg Murphy, and son Kevin Sims (Diana), along with her grandchildren Kelly Murphy, David Page, Thomas Murphy, and Kenneth Sims. She also leaves behind a very special caregiver/family member who always went above and beyond, Margie Bennett.
