Elizabeth Anne McFarland, 80 years young, passed away in the early morning of September 12, 2011. Born September 18, 1930, she was the daughter of the late David and Louise Mabee Petty. Anne, as she was called, was originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1970 she moved to Virginia Beach with her late husband, Joe McElroy, and as a Navy wife, for over 27 years, she was able to travel and see the world. After Joe passed away, she survived two more husbands, Stuart Graham and John McFarland. Anne loved all her husbands, and they were very lucky to have such an adoring wife. She was also predeceded in death by her sister, Doris Petty Smith.
Memories of a long and eventful life will remain with her brother-in-law, Kenneth Smith of Chattanooga, and his five children and grandchildren; her three children and their families in Virginia Beach: JoAnne McElroy-Hall & Marty Schara, Janice McElroy & Steve White, and Greg & Shauna McElroy. She also leaves behind her three granddaughters, Heather Brusso of Chesapeake, Jennifer Giannone, and McKenzie Hall; her two grandsons, Kevin McElroy and Pierce Hall; and step-grandsons, Kyle & Tyler McElroy, all of Virginia Beach. Anne also had six great-grandchildren, Justin Brusso; Julia, Allison, & Vincent Giannone; and Jade McElroy & Kai McElroy-Goff.
Anne always had a story to tell. She was a very lively woman who had a way of making anyone smile on their worst day. Her personality would spread like wildfire whenever she entered a room. While she is no longer with us in person, she will always remain in our hearts and thoughts.
A Celebration of Life will be held on her 81st birthday this Sunday, Sept. 18th, at 2 P.M. at Holland Road Baptist Church, 4881 Euclid Rd., VA Beach, near Best Buy off Independence Blvd,(757) 497 6541. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
