Frances Louise Chidester; Mother, Sister, Nurse, lover of cats, birds and British television, left us all too early on May 20, 2015.
She was born on Janurary 21, 1944 to William L. Tomlinson and Nellie R. Gardner in Norfolk, Virginia. She spent her early years in Norfolk near Wards’ Corner, until her parents moved to Amelia county. She spent the rest of her school years there and graduated from Amelia High School.
While in school she met, fell in love with and then married Clyde Clifton Chidester on March 31th, 1962. She had two children, Janice Delaney and Scott Chidester, one Grandchild, Jessica Hope and one Great Grandchild Aubree Grace. She is also survived by her brother Tom, along with four nieces and nephews.
While raising her two children she attended Chesapeake Vocational Technical Center as a CNA and graduated first in her class becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Portsmouth General Hospital and then Maryview Hospital in the Medical Surgical units where she cared for those who were terminally ill. The repore she built with those so close to the end of their lives was a source of great pride for her. After the hospitals she worked for a time at a private family practice in Portsmouth before coming to Sentara Home Care.
Many will remember the woman who often brought others into her home when they had no home of their own. Her door was open to every child in the neighborhood at 2804 Willowwood drive, and she was a second mother to many. She was liberal in politics, wore her heart on her sleeve and considered education the best investment for any individual. While many times outspoken or even bossy, she always felt she had the best interest of others when she spoke her mind.
A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 pm, Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Family Choice Funerals & Cremations.
Please share a memory with the family via the “Condolences and Tributes” tab.
