
Irvin Watts “Mac” McKinney, 78, of Virginia Beach, joined his wife of 52 years, Susan “Sue” Claire Oliver McKinney in Heaven at 8:32 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 2010. He was born April 22, 1932 in Lawrenceville, VA. A native of Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Meredithville, VA, he was the son of the late Joseph Warren and Maude Smith McKinney. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War, and always wanted folks to know that he was a proud graduate of the School of Hard Knocks. Mac worked at Frederick Military Academy and Frederick College in Portsmouth, VA from 1958 to 1985 in various capacities, including barber and football coach. He was honored to have touched the lives of so many young men over the years. Later in life, he worked as a federal grain inspector. His favorite hobbies included hunting and fishing with his friends and grandchildren, and working on his farm in Brunswick County, VA.
Mac will be missed by his daughters, Susan Leigh McKinney Ragsdale and Caralynn Jo McKinney Crawford; a son, Timothy O’Neil McKinney; and five grandchildren, Timothy Michael Fridel, Patrick O’Neil McKinney, Michelle Oliver McKinney, Susan Leigh Crawford, and Michael Irvin Crawford. He was predeceased by his sisters, Minnie, Ruth, Jean, and Elsie; and his brothers, Buddy, Neil, and Tim.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 2033 Greens Chapel Road, Brodnax, VA.
