John Carter Durfee (56) passed away Monday, July 20, 2015 at his home in Virginia Beach. John was born in Pasadena, CA July 17, 1959 to the late Anne Willers, and John Ellsworth Durfee.
He graduated from Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, CA in 1977 and became a US Navy Quartermaster. John retired 22 years later in 1999 and then joined the Merchant Marines for a short stint. His final job was with Oakwood Worldwide, a corporate housing company.
John was a long time “Trekker” and music lover who “boldly went” with Frank Sinatra to “New York New York” at karaoke bars when given the opportunity. Chocolate and milk were not safe in his presence. He loved to reminisce about his Navy years; and took great pride in his daughters and grandson. He will be remembered for his sense of humor; and unique ability to connect with people
in a way that made them recognize him even when years had passed.
John is survived by: Madaline, his wife of 30 years; his daughters Jessica Rhodes (Matt), Kimberly Scaringello (Zacharia), Crystal Bonvini, Jennifer Durfee; his father John (Vanice) and his grandson Tucker Rhodes. He is also survived by his sister Katie Anderson, and his brothers Dennis Durfee (Tina) and Bill Durfee (Melissa) as well as two half sisters and a half brother, and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his mother Anne, his step-father Stan Willers, and his sister Barbara Durfee. A life celebration was held for John at his home Saturday, July 26, 2015. John,
We won’t be seeing you getting out of your car or carrying groceries or doing any of life’s everyday things any longer. We won’t be talking to you now and then and seeing you smile and it just isn’t fair. We trust you are at peace looking out for your family from above. May you have eternal peace and rest in God’s loving arms.

John was an awesome friend! We served together as Quartermasters onboard the USS Reclaimer (ARS-42) in Pearl Harbor, HI. for almost 4 years. John talked about his wife and kids all the time and he always had a big smile on his face. He was a true family man. I miss you John.
