Liwanag S. Ortiz from Cavite City, Philippines passed away March 30, 2018 at the age of 79. He was a retired veteran from the U.S. Navy and later from Stihl Corporation. He was an all Navy boxing champion for his weight class and even managed to compete in the Golden Glove at Madison Square Garden. Although a boxer and a fighter in spirit, Liwanag was a quiet, gentle, loving, and compassionate man who placed his family above all else. He cherished his wife and best friend, Josefina Q. Ortiz, for over 50 years. Their love for each other was pure and unconditional. Even after 50 years, they still held hands, laughed together, and genuinely enjoyed each others company. They were soul mates and he will be truly missed.
Liwanag was predeceased in death by his father, Filomeno Ortiz Sr, his mother, Tomasa Ortiz, and his oldest brother, Filomeno Ortiz Jr. He is survived by his wife, Josefina Ortiz; his two sons Dennis Ortiz and Ramon Ortiz; his two daughters Judy Gregg and Jennifer Turkel; his son in laws David Gregg and Lance Turkel; his grandchildren Kristin, Jacqueline, Aaron, and his little buddy Zoey; his great grandson Henry; his siblings David Ortiz, Elias Ortiz, Nestor Sinfuente, and Daisy Roberts; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm Thursday, April 5th, 2018 with a funeral service to be held at 6:00 pm at Family Choice Burials & Cremations. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 6th, 2018 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk.

Sorry For Your Loss!
Dear Josefine and Ortiz family.
I am deeply pained and words are of no help in expressing the sorrow I feel at this moment.
Prayers and fond memories are what we have to remember our dearly departed. May the love of family and friends comfort you during these difficult days, my most heartfelt condolences.
Lila
Dear Josefina,
I am sorry for your lost. He was my shipmate on board the USS America CVA 66 from 1972-1976. We shared an apartment with other guys from the ship at 10th Bay, Norfolk, Va. We live at the same compound at 15th Bay St. when you and your children first came to Norfolk. My partner’s name is Rita and my name is Eddie. You might not remember me but I for sure do. Ling was the godfather to my 2 children. I lost track of him when I left Norfolk. We respected and well liked by all of us so much. Again, my condolence to you and your family. God Bless You All.
