Mary Catherine Goodson (Cathy), 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23rd, 2017 in Norfolk, Virginia. Cathy was born on July 12th, 1937 in Canton, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Roy and Celia Henderson, wife of the late Everett W. Goodson, and she was affectionately known as “Nanny” to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cathy worked as an Electronics Assembler for Raytheon Service Company where she retired after 23 years. She loved to read, cook, and spend time with her family. She was kind, generous, and compassionate. Cathy lived a life filled with the love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, many other family members, and friends who are spread across Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Texas. She will be greatly missed as she takes her place with the angels.
Mary was survived by Curtis (Naomi) Henderson, Brother; Phyllis (Walt) Deeter, Daughter; Cindi (Allen) Mooradian, Daughter; Richard (Melanie) Goodson, Son; William (Jan) Goodson, Son; Matthew (Jenna) Melvin, Grandson; Brian Goodson, Grandson; Sylvester (BJ) Griffin III, Grandson; Zachery Mooradian, Grandson; Timothy Brooks, Grandson; Gage Goodson, Grandson; Jared Goodson, Grandson; and Great grandchildren Layla, Victoria and Brian Jr.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date in the North Carolina Mountains, the place where Cathy’s life began and loving family remains. Tentative plans are being made for a service in Norfolk, where her home has been for the past 50+ years and many friends and loved ones remain as well. Please check back at Family Choice’s website for updated information.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the veterans’ charity of your choice. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer 6 weeks prior to her death, and she was a Navy wife, Army mother, and grandmother to members of the Army and Air Force who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sister to brothers who served in Vietnam. As such, she had a personal understanding and strong passion for the sacrifices that service members and their families make. She would be honored to know that contributions were made in memory of her.
Please share a memory with the family via the Condolences & Tributes tab.
