Matthew William Holt, born March 24, 1981 (41) from Gonzalez, California, passed in his sleep at home in Virginia Beach on April 15th, 2022. His heart was literally too big. He begrudgingly served in the US Air Force and Navy since 1999, and happily retired on April 1, 2022, as an Electronics Technician Second Class (ET2). While he’d have preferred a Viking burial or to be flung into space, he will be cremated and distributed amongst the women in his life.
Matt, a sweetheart and comedian, was known across multiple states for his cooking, particularly marinated and smoked meats and food experiments. His love for nerd things extended from video games to supernatural lore, Dungeons and Dragons, to anything involving dark humor and weaponry. His crunchy, grumpy exterior contained a soft, gentle, but firm soul he had no regard for.
He is planning to haunt his wife, Bridget, his daughters Lily (18), Grace (16), and Bean (13), and son Ethan (22), his parents Evelyn and Charlie, Chuck and JoAnn, ex-wife and brother-husband Stef and Jason, and siblings Ben and Amelia. Matt moderately tolerated most people, but deeply loved those he considered close friends. They know who they are.
His family will receive friends from 12:00 pm- 2:00pm with a service to follow at 2:00 pm Friday, April 22nd, 2022 at Family Choice Funerals and Cremations in Virginia Beach, VA.
He will have proper military honors rendered during the service, followed by a 21 NERF Gun salute from his closest family and friends. All are welcomed to attend.
Beef jerky and food seasonings would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. He is loved so deep and will be sorely missed.

Matt was an amazing friend, husband and father. He brought love (and food) to everyone he was close to. His time with us was too short. But his soul, his legacy and his humor will live on.
We love you Matt!!!

I still can’t believe he’s actually gone. While the memories we had together may have been few they were impactful and have made my life all the brighter for having them.
To truly honor Matt I know what I must do. I must embrace the passion for cooking that he had and awoke in me!
From now on every dish made in the Grange house will be made with the same zeal and love that Matt put into all his endeavors!
All our love and condolences,
Matt and Bridget Grange
I am so incredibly saddened to read this news. He was such a fully smart and just kind human being.
Matt was a beautiful humorous soul and will be dearly missed. It’s rare for me to find someone who’s love of cooking surpassed my own, but he did. Much love to you guys.
Bridget and family – Please accept our deepest condolences for the sudden loss of your husband, Matt. The Boys Hope Girls Hope of St. Louis family is shocked and saddened and will keep you in our prayers during this most difficult time.
Matthews was the brother I never wanted. He changed the course of my whole life and I will miss him with the least black part of my heart.
Your obituary for Matt made me chuckle, which I think he would have liked. But it is hard to imagine a world without him. Bridget, you and Matt and the girls have always been so special to our family. You were always there when Adam needed his friends the most. That is the kind of people you are.
I am happy and honored to share the memory of your beautiful wedding. You and Matt were made for each other. His time on this earth was not nearly enough.
Bridget my heart hurts for you and the girls and everyone that Matt touched. Even though few, I will forever cherish our interactions ♥️
BTW…the monies for jerky is on the way 😜
My sincerest condolences and prayers to Matt’s family and lived ones.
Jeff and I are so deeply sorry for your loss. Sending prayers for you and the kids to get thru this.
I was blessed to have him as my child. I am proud of him as a man. He gave me a beautiful Daughter-By-Law, Bridget. He brought me three granddaughters, Lily-Beth, Grace and Lily-Bean. They are amazing and I adore them so much 💗
I am so sorry to hear of your loss Bridget. I will be keeping your beautiful family in my prayers and hope that you can find some peace and laughter from memories of Matt mixed into your grief.
I will keep Bridget and your family in my prayers
