Robert “Bob” Harwell, 93, passed away on Thursday, September 28th, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
“Bob” as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was born October 9th, 1923 to the late Bob and Eva Harwell in Charlotte, North Carolina. He served our country proudly during WWII in the U.S. Army in the 101St Airborne Division and was P.O.W. for several months. To say Bob lived an exciting life would be an understatement. As side from his military service, Bob was a NASCAR driver and drove in the first race at Darlington Motor Speedway, a blocker when people ran moonshine and worked for the Virginian-Pilot as the Day Pressroom Manager where he would work sometimes 2-3 days straight. When he wasn’t saving the world or working tirelessly to take care of his family; you could find Bob at “the office” fishing and spending time with his family. Bob will always be remembered as a loving father, grandfather.
He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory are: children: Robert R. Harwell Jr. Son, Norfolk Virginia, Stanley W. Harwell, Son, Surry, Virginia Lisa Ann Mawyer/Harwell, Daughter, Norfolk
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 21st, 2017 at Miles Memorial Methodist Church. 9450 Granby St, Norfolk, VA 23503. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
