Robert Lynn Nixon, 70, passed away on Sunday, February 14th, 2021.
“Sonny” as he was affectionately known by family and friends was born January 9th, 1951 in Norfolk, Virginia to Miles K. and Claudia Nixon. He graduated from Norview High School and then went to N.C. State. After college Sonny went on to proudly serve our country in the U.S. Navy for four years. After leaving the Navy, Sonny became a Master Plumber until his retirement. Those who knew Sonny would tell you he was a good man with a good heart. He was a long-time member of The Carpenters House International Church where his faith and devotion to Jesus Christ truly blossomed. Since he was a child, Sonny enjoyed all sports, but his true love was Baseball. No one knew the game better than him. Sonny loved music. He was an avid harmonica player and loved Marshall Tucker, The Allman Brothers Band, and Jimi Hendrix. Sonny will always be remembered as father, grandfather, brother and friend who would go above and beyond for those he loved. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory is: daughter, Andrea N. Davis (Chad); son, Miles A. Nixon (Danielle); sister, Sheryl K. Bennett (Ray); two brothers: Michael Kirkwood and Chuck Kirkwood; and four grandchildren: Miles A. Nixon Jr, Hannah L. Condon, Marissa L. Nixon, and Noah C. Dower. Glad to have known Sonny for a short period of time. I felt that i have known for along time.Rest in Peace my friend.
Sonny was a good friend at NC State and for a short while my fraternity brother at Phi Tau. He soon left to join the Navy and I lost track of him but much later learned he was back at Virginia Beach and was able to find a contact number for him. As I once told him many years ago, you don’t forget your friends. I never did. Sonny was a good man. RIP.
Chip Alexander, Raleigh NC.
I went to Norview and then NC State with Sonny, and he later became a brother in my Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. One of my fondest memories of Sonny was once when he had a blind date with a girl from Meredith whose name I won’t divulge (let’s call her “Jane”) but I remember what she looked like–and God bless her, she was very unattractive. So I was at Meredith to pick up the girl I was dating at the time, and down the hall walks Sonny, all dressed up for his blind date. I asked who it was, and when he said Jane, I begged him to turn around and make a run for it. Knowing Sonny he probably went through with it, but I’m sure once he laid eyes on her he wished he had taken my advice. May his memory be eternal.
