
Lillian Ruth Gladfelter McCubbin, 88, went to be with the Lord on January 24th, 2016. Born in Glen Rock, PA on August 31, 1927, Ruth was the daughter of the late Harry Robert and Lillie May Gladfelter. Her love of the pipe organ and great sacred music began at the age of 14 when she began playing at Immanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church in Glen Rock. She was a 1949 graduate of West Chester (PA) State Teachers College and taught elementary school music from 1950-1955. She was the organist at Springfield United Methodist Church from 1957 until she retired as Organist Emeritus in 1986. After moving to Virginia Beach in 1999, Ruth was the organist at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church for several years. She was certified as a Colleague by the American Guild of Organists in 2003. Ruth was a member of O.E.S #483 Triangle Chapter of Shrewsbury, PA and O.E.S #184 Lynnhaven Chapter of Virginia Beach.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 65 years, Meade Earl McCubbin; daughters Donna Moulton (James) of Clifton, VA and Ann Levis (Win) of Virginia Beach; grandchildren Jaclyn Bucknum (Bradford) of Phila., PA, Ryan Levis and Lindy Levis of Virginia Beach and Emily Hirscher (Nate), of Los Angeles,CA; step-grandsons Jeffrey Moulton (Meghan) and Stacy Moulton (Andrea) and great-grandchildren Jack, Max, Owen and Ava. Ruth is also survived by two brothers, H. Robert Gladfelter (and late Carole) of Lebanon, NH and Rev. Arthur Gladfelter (Sharon) of Hughesville, PA.
After residing for 44 years in Burke, VA, Meade and Ruth retired to Atlantic Shores Retirement Community where they became active members of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church and the Agape Sunday School class. They enjoyed traveling, including spending winter months in their motorhome.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 13th at the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church at 19th St. at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
